On August 30, 1957, the night before the declaration, a crowd gathered at Merdeka Square. A large field in Kuala Lumpur, to witness the birth of an independent nation. The lights were turned off for two minutes of darkness, then at midnight, the British Union Jack was lowered and Malaysia's new flag was raised in its place.

Next, Kuala Lumpur, August 22 - Dataran Merdeka, the main location for the annual National Day parade has been given a makeover for this year's celebration. The place has been given a makeover to given visitors the feeling of like they were at the Merdeka Stadium on August 31, 1957. According to Kuala Lumpur City Hall executive director Datuk Mohd Najib Mohd, the design of the grandstand would depict part of the Merdela Stadium. Malaysia comes together on Merdeka Day to celebrate the many ethnic groups that call the country home.
